NEW Green waste program coming to Clearfield!
Clearfield City is rolling out a green waste program! This program will provide an environmentally friendly disposal option for green waste during spring and summer months. It will cost $10.50 a month to have a green waste can, and the container will act as a regular second garbage can during the off months (December to March).
You will be automatically enrolled in the program unless you choose to opt out by March 14, 2025. If you do not opt out by March 14, a can will be delivered to you at the end of April and the city will begin billing in May. To opt out, visit: https://tinyurl.com/3r8jkrzc.

Why do I have to opt out verses opt in?
We originally pursued the opt in ability. Unfortunately, our trash haulers and processors both said this would not be feasible due to the cost of running the program. Having residents opt out ensures as many households as possible can participate and reduce waste. We know the opt out isn’t ideal, but it was the only way to provide our residents the option to have a green waste can. If you’d rather not participate, that’s okay! Thanks for your understanding.

What if I enroll now but change my mind?
Our Customer Service Center can help you cancel the service and arrange for Waste Management to pick up the green waste can. There will be a $25 cancellation fee if you opt out after the March 14 deadline. You can reach us by emailing csc@clearfieldcity.org or calling 801-525-2700.
What if I missed the deadline but still want to opt out?
Call our Customer Service Center and we can help you with this. There will be a $25 cancellation fee for opting out after the March 14 deadline. If you missed the deadline but the cans have not been delivered, we will do our best to alert Waste Management before a can is dropped off at your house. If it is too late to stop delivery or if you have already received a can, call us after you’ve received it, and we will arrange for Waste Management to pick up the can from your house.
Why is there a cancellation fee if I miss the March 14 deadline?
Waste Management must purchase the green waste containers to provide this service for our city. The containers will have already been purchased if you cancel after March 14.
What is the city doing to make sure residents see this?
The city is doing robust outreach efforts to ensure residents see this and know what to do if they would like to opt out. All utility bill customers will be getting two mailed notices. We will also be sending frequent email reminders to the email address on file with the utility account. We are also sending out e-newsletters, doing social media outreach, and posting notice on the homepage of our website.
Why is Clearfield's green waste program more expensive than surrounding cities' recycling programs?
Clearfield City’s green waste program is more expensive than nearby cities’ recycling programs because we have the ability for residents to opt out. If we did a mandatory roll out like surrounding cities, it would be cheaper. But, the city council valued resident choice so we decided to have an opt out option. A recycling program is also cheaper to run than a green waste program.
I have tried the link 4 times and I receive a 404 page not found error. What a great plan, here’s a link to opt out that does not work. Once again instead of asking the residents of the city to sign up if they are interested in the program, it is being forced upon everyone unless they opt out. Please provide a link that actually works.
Hi Stephen, sorry it isn’t working for you. We’ve had others check it and it seems to be working for them Try this link: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/9e6b15e3bb9e4958a9fe962d0d6f3f67
Does this affect people that live in apartments
I too am not happy about this
I’m not happy about the green waste program either! My can showed up yesterday but I did NOT see any mailers or emails about this program. Now I have to pay $25 for them to take the can back that I didn’t order or want! This is so unfair and dishonest. I talked to 2 Clearfield City people but they don’t seem to care. I was given the name of Nico Petersen of the waste management office but she/he never answers calls or returns calls. So… I have been mugged for $25. Not happy.
Hi Jay,
Thank you for voicing your concerns. We apologize that waste management has been difficult to reach. Please reach out to our customer service department if you need additional help. Here is their email: csc@clearfieldcity.org.
Best,
Clearfield City Communications
How often will they be picked up?
It will be picked up weekly on your regular trash day starting the week of May 5-9th.
What if I already have a second can, can I drop the second can and get the Green Waste can instead?
Hi Brandon! Thanks for your interest in the program. You will need to call our Customer Service Center to cancel your second can. We will then have Waste Management come and pick it up from your curb. The green waste cans will be delivered at the end of April. You can decide to cancel your second can now or wait until the green waste cans are delivered. Billing for the green waste cans begins in May.
So do i assume there will be 3 different trucks picking up trash? The usual garbage truck the recycled and now the green?
Hi Jill, green waste cans will be picked up weekly on your regular trash day. It will be a separate truck that comes by that day.
Because Clinton is small and we have to use the Clearfield post office, sometimes our mail is under Clearfield and not Clinton. That being said, is Clinton also part of this or only the actual city of Clearfield?
Hi Mistie, this only applies to residents of Clearfield City. Clinton and the surrounding cities are not part of this program.
How can I return my second black can to trade for the green waste can
You can give our front desk a call at 801-525-2700.
I opt NOT to be put on this program. I’ve tried calling several times and it just keeps ringing with no one to answer. I’ve also tried the web site and it’s no good! this is Carol Foree (foreec@q.com). Thank you
Hi Carol, we have seen your comment and passed it on to our Customer Service Team. They will be emailing you, thanks for providing your contact information.
I personally wish they would start the program in March. I already have 6 contractor-size bags full of yard clippings and I noticed strong smoke in the air today which means that someone is already burning their yard leaves or whatever. Could it be moved up a month?
Unfortunately not, we want to give people enough time to opt out if they don’t wish to have the extra service.
This is wrong! Because Clearfield city is too lazy or just dose not want to spend the money to make sure everyone that would like to can OPT IN to this program. I don’t want this program. I am sick of phone calls and everyone telling me I have to OPT OUT of something I was not even looking or want.
