NEW Green waste program coming to Clearfield!

Clearfield City is rolling out a green waste program! This program will provide an environmentally friendly disposal option for green waste during spring and summer months. It will cost $10.50 a month to have a green waste can, and the container will act as a regular second garbage can during the off months (December to March).

You will be automatically enrolled in the program unless you choose to opt out by March 14, 2025. If you do not opt out by March 14, a can will be delivered to you at the end of April and the city will begin billing in May. To opt out, visit: https://tinyurl.com/3r8jkrzc.

When is green waste collected?

The green waste cans will be collected weekly on your regular trash day. The first week of pick-up will be May 5-9.

When will the green waste cans be delivered?

Green waste cans will be delivered at the end of April unless you opt out of the program by March 14. The can will be dropped off at your curb by Waste Management, and you will not need to be present for the drop off.

Why do I have to opt out verses opt in?

We originally pursued the opt in ability. Unfortunately, our trash haulers and processors both said this would not be feasible due to the cost of running the program. Having residents opt out ensures as many households as possible can participate and reduce waste. We know the opt out isn’t ideal, but it was the only way to provide our residents the option to have a green waste can. If you’d rather not participate, that’s okay! Thanks for your understanding.

Our Customer Service Center can help you cancel the service and arrange for Waste Management to pick up the green waste can. There will be a $25 cancellation fee if you opt out after the March 14 deadline. You can reach us by emailing csc@clearfieldcity.org or calling 801-525-2700.

What if I missed the deadline but still want to opt out?

Call our Customer Service Center and we can help you with this. There will be a $25 cancellation fee for opting out after the March 14 deadline. If you missed the deadline but the cans have not been delivered, we will do our best to alert Waste Management before a can is dropped off at your house. If it is too late to stop delivery or if you have already received a can, call us after you’ve received it, and we will arrange for Waste Management to pick up the can from your house.

Why is there a cancellation fee if I miss the March 14 deadline?

Waste Management must purchase the green waste containers to provide this service for our city. The containers will have already been purchased if you cancel after March 14.

What is the city doing to make sure residents see this?

The city is doing robust outreach efforts to ensure residents see this and know what to do if they would like to opt out. All utility bill customers will be getting two mailed notices. We will also be sending frequent email reminders to the email address on file with the utility account. We are also sending out e-newsletters, doing social media outreach, and posting notice on the homepage of our website.

Why is Clearfield's green waste program more expensive than surrounding cities' recycling programs?

Clearfield City’s green waste program is more expensive than nearby cities’ recycling programs because we have the ability for residents to opt out. If we did a mandatory roll out like surrounding cities, it would be cheaper. But, the city council valued resident choice so we decided to have an opt out option. A recycling program is also cheaper to run than a green waste program.
